Snoverkill Vignettes

February 11th, 2010 by julia | 3 Comments

I have finally come to experience what my middle school language teacher would describe as an external conflict: Julia vs. Nature.  It was snonly a matter of time before the puns and the snow both got to be too much. I just got to a point where it went from being a peaceful winter wonderland, [...]

Timbuktu to Tibet

February 16th, 2009 by julia | No Comments

Coworker Nico and I decided to go to the Textile Museum in D.C. to try and do a whole multimedia package about an exhibit on ancient rugs from all over the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. Eventually, this project will be in three forms: a video piece, an audio slide show and a [...]

Gorilla Baby

February 4th, 2009 by julia | 1 Comment

This week in gestation: I just checked the DCist site and they’re reporting that the new baby western lowland gorilla born earlier this year at the National Zoo is a girl! The video of Mandara and her as-yet-unnamed baby is worth checking out because we could all use some more cute in our lives.

Inauguration Updates

Best Of | 9:32 p.m. I made a “best of” all 128 photos I took today. I decided to convert them to black and white because my camera doesn’t really pick up on color as vibrantly as it should, and because history is always framed in black and white. I don’t normally incorporate such literal [...]

"I Witnessed History"

^This is probably one of the most popular buttons I’ve seen on people around D.C., and I might pick one up tomorrow too. (I have no Obama merchandise and it’s starting to make me sad; I was offered an Obama wall clock, nail clippers and shoelaces today.) I think it’s ironic that a nation so [...]

Obama Fever

January 18th, 2009 by julia | 1 Comment

They’re here. Overheard on the metro: “We need to get there early.” (Everyone else is thinking the same thing.) “Let’s get all our shopping done tomorrow because I don’t want to carry any bags through security.” “I made these Obama calendars to help me pay for college, want to take a look?” (They were really [...]

Crystalline Engineering

Snoooooooooooooooooooooooow! First snowfall today, mostly flurrying that didn’t stick. But, oh, was it beautiful. Twenty-two and still excited by snowfall. Tomorrow: snow boot shopping.

Show Plate

November 19th, 2008 by julia | 2 Comments

Few things in life give me more pleasure than snapping pictures of dinners I cook and showing them to you — whoever you are.  Tonight’s dinner was a resounding success because I marinated the two Mahi Mahi fillets overnight in the fridge. That’s right, I actually prepared something in advance. I’m breaking all kinds of [...]

Spaghetti Week Begins

October 5th, 2008 by julia | 4 Comments

Sloooooow weekend at juliaritchey.com. I celebrated my first week of work with Catherine on Friday at a bar called the Front Page. It was kind of upscale (read: yuppie), but nonetheless enjoyable. I cannot recall a better whiskey sour in recent memory. Realizing I have zero groceries–thus spaghetti week–and three bills due before I get [...]
